84% of Brits can’t tell a legal EAPC from an illegal moped — and most fires trace to the same confusion. The new E-bike Positive trust mark is the bike trade’s answer: an independent audit that tells you at a glance if the e-bike and the shop meet UK road law and battery safety standards.
The short answer: look for the mark before you buy — especially online.
In 30 years in the Bournemouth workshop I’ve seen the shift: cheap direct imports and conversion kits sold as road legal when they are not. UK law hasn’t changed for 2026 — a legal EAPC is still 250W continuous, cuts out at 15.5mph, pedals must propel it. The trust mark, launched 14 July 2026 with backing from the Bicycle Association and Association of Cycle Traders, gives you a way to check without memorising statutes.

E-bike Positive Trust Mark UK: What It Actually Checks
The E-bike Positive campaign, previously an education drive backed by Bosch eBike Systems, Cycling UK and the Bicycle Association, became a trust mark on 14 July 2026 as reported by Cycling Electric. Think Red Tractor, but for e-bikes: you see the badge, you know the bike has been independently verified.

Workshop Take
Light smoke or a sweet chemical smell while charging is a stop-riding flag. I’ve had two customers bring in kits bought on marketplaces with no UK importer label — no one to call when the charger failed. The trust mark at least means someone audited the supply chain.
Buying Tip
- Only 16% know the 15.5mph cut-off YouGov via Cycling Electric — ask the seller to confirm 250W + cut-off in writing.
- 60% guessed wrong or didn’t know — if the listing shouts 500W/1000W as road legal, walk away.
- 69% didn’t know a wrong charger can cause fire — use the supplied charger only.
E-bike Positive Trust Mark UK: Why It Matters Now
This isn’t a rebrand for the sake of it. The backdrop is fires, confusion and a failed law change that still trips buyers up.
The 500W proposal was dropped. The Department for Transport consulted on raising the limit to 500W and allowing twist throttles to 15.5mph — outcome January 2025 confirmed no change after 2,121 responses. In 2026 a 500W bike is still a moped or motorbike in law — registration, tax, insurance, helmet required. You will still see sellers claiming otherwise.
Battery safety became statutory. The Office for Product Safety and Standards published statutory guidelines on lithium-ion battery safety for e-bikes (Dec 2024) — now the baseline for UKCA. Add the TfL restriction from March 2025: non-folding e-bikes restricted on parts of the network after a run of battery fires. We cover battery care and servicing for cautious owners in Dorset.
For commuters, that matters twice: a bike you can charge safely at home and carry legally if you mix bike and train.

How to Use the E-bike Positive Trust Mark Before You Buy
You don’t need to memorise regs — use the mark as a 30-second filter, then do two quick checks.
- Check the badge: on the brand’s site and the shop window — is E-bike Positive listed at ebikepositive.co.uk? If not, ask why.
- Check the label: motor marked 250W, battery voltage and manufacturer visible, UKCA mark present. No UK importer = no traceability.
- Check the charger: supplied charger only — 69% didn’t know a wrong charger can cause fires YouGov. No universal chargers.
- Check the listing: if it advertises 500W as road legal, it’s mis-selling. In 2026 it’s moped law.
