Specialized Tarmac SL9 UK: Full Range From £3,999 – S-Level, Expert and Comp Launch

The fastest Tarmac ever just got attainable. S-Works at £11,999 grabbed the headlines in June, but the full Specialized Tarmac SL9 UK range – S-Level, Expert and Comp from £3,999 – is the news that actually puts the platform on more UK bars. Same aero shape, same geometry, now with a FACT 10r frame option. Here’s the price ladder, spec-by-spec, and which tier makes sense from a workshop bench in Bournemouth.

● LAUNCHED CONFIRMED 25 AUG 2026 · SPECIALIZED UK

The short answer for Tarmac SL9 UK: Comp at £3,999 is the real story, Expert at £5,999 is the sweet spot, S-Level at £8,749 is for racers who want S-Works speed without the S-Works invoice.

In 30 years fitting bikes in the Bournemouth workshop I have seen this pattern before: a flagship launches at five figures, then the same frameset tech trickles to a more sensible layup. Specialized did exactly that with the Crux in May, and now the Tarmac SL9 UK follows. The FACT 10r Tarmac SL9 UK frame keeps the 12r fork and the aero cockpit – you lose about 500g versus FACT 12r, but you save £3,250 at S-Level and up to £8,000 at Comp. For most Dorset riders, that Tarmac SL9 UK weight delta vanishes on the road long before the price delta does.

Below is what launched on 25 August for Tarmac SL9 UK, what each tier actually gives you, and how it links to gear we fit every week.

Specialized Tarmac SL9 UK: What’s Launched

Specialized confirmed the full Specialized Tarmac SL9 UK range on 25 August 2026 via UK dealers (road.cc, BikeRadar, Balfe’s Bikes). The headline is not another special edition – it’s a new frame tier that makes the SL9 platform accessible. The S-Works FACT 12r frame (687g, £11,999) is now joined by FACT 10r frames that keep the FACT 12r fork and the aero geometry. For the official build picker, see Specialized UK.

Frame and cockpit – what changes

  • FACT 10r carbon (S-Level, Expert, Comp) plus FACT 12r fork: same SL9 aero shape, about 500g heavier than S-Works FACT 12r frame, same handling stack
  • Roval Rapide cockpit retained: integrated one-piece on S-Level, stem plus alloy bar on Expert/Comp (easy swap, cheaper crash replacement)
  • Geometry and clearance unchanged: WorldTour aero with 32mm tyre clearance, winter 28s fit with mudguards via aftermarket mounts

Groupsets and wheels – where money is spent

  • S-Level GBP 8,749: SRAM Red AXS or Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Roval Rapide CL III wheels, Power Pro Mirror saddle, 7.1kg (56cm)
  • Expert GBP 5,999: SRAM Force AXS or Shimano Ultegra Di2, Roval C38 carbon wheels, 7.53kg
  • Comp GBP 3,999: SRAM Rival AXS or Shimano 105 Di2, DT Swiss R470 Disc, 8.14 to 8.21kg

FACT 10r from £3,999
Same SL9 aero, DT R470 wheels – upgrade wheels later for best value.

Workshop take

The FACT 10r Tarmac SL9 UK layup is the sensible place to spend less. Wheel and groupset choices matter more on Dorset lanes than 500g of frame – and both are upgradeable. I have cut open enough crashed frames to say: protect the down tube and chainstay on day one.

Timing tip

  • Want the lowest Tarmac SL9 UK entry? Comp at £3,999 + RideWrap kit beats a stock Expert on total cost if you ride year-round.
  • Want race-ready out the box? Expert at £5,999 – C38 carbons are the first upgrade you’d buy anyway.
  • Want near-S-Works? S-Level saves £3,250 for the same wheels and cockpit – the closest to “second fastest” claims.

What the Tarmac SL9 UK Range Means for Riders

For commuters and club riders, this Tarmac SL9 UK Comp unlocks the SL9 without a five-figure commitment – and you keep the aero gains that Specialized validated as “lowest Time to Finish” for the platform. For racers, the Tarmac SL9 UK S-Level is the cold maths: identical Roval Rapide CL III and integrated bar to S-Works, FACT 12r fork, and a £3,250 saving you can put toward wheels, power meter, or a season of entries. Expert sits in the middle as the best out-of-the-box value – Roval C38 carbons throw the old Comp alloy compromise away. Lab claim vs Dorset road – where 500g matters

Specialized quotes 687g (S-Works FACT 12r) vs 822g S-Level FACT 10r for Tarmac SL9 UK – about 500g complete-bike delta (6.6kg to 7.1kg). On a flat Bournemouth seafront sprint, aero dominates. On a 10% Purbeck climb, 500g is ~0.06 km/h at 300W – measurable by power meter, invisible to legs. Wheels and tyres move the dial more than frame layup at this level.

S-Works lab weight 6.6kg (56) FACT 12r, CLX III, integrated bar
S-Level real 7.1kg FACT 10r, CL III, same bar – £3,250 saved
Expert / Comp 7.53kg / 8.21kg C38 carbons vs R470 alloys – biggest ride feel gap

Tarmac SL9 UK Buying Advice: Which Tier to Pick

From the bench, the choice is simple:

  • Under £4,500? Comp. You get the real SL9 aero platform; put £400 toward RideWrap and tubeless 28s and you are faster than a bare Expert on gritty winter roads.
  • One bike to race and train? Expert at £5,999. The Roval C38 is the wheel most Comp buyers add later – buying it baked in saves labour and faff.
  • Chasing grams? S-Level. Same Red/Dura-Ace and Rapide cockpit as S-Works, clinically close weight, three grand left for entries and coaching.

New gravel option also dropped the same week – Decathlon’s Van Rysel RCR-G/EDR-G from £2,100 (road.cc 24 Aug) – if you want off-tarmac speed for half a Tarmac Comp, see Best Gravel Bikes 2026.

Quick answers

From £3,999 (Comp, Rival AXS or 105 Di2, DT R470) to £11,999 (S-Works, Red AXS or Dura-Ace Di2, CLX III). In between: Expert £5,999 (Force AXS / Ultegra Di2, Roval C38) and S-Level £8,749/£8,799 (Red AXS / Dura-Ace Di2, Rapide CL III). All confirmed 25 August 2026.

FACT 12r is the S-Works layup – Specialized claims 687g frame. FACT 10r is used for S-Level, Expert and Comp, with a FACT 12r fork retained. Complete bikes are about 500g heavier (7.1kg S-Level vs 6.6kg S-Works in 56cm) but share the same aero shape and geometry.

Expert at £5,999 is the sweet spot – you get carbon Roval C38 wheels that most Comp buyers would upgrade to anyway. Comp at £3,999 is best if you want the lowest entry to the SL9 platform and will wrap + upgrade wheels over time. S-Level is for racers who want S-Works speed for £3,250 less.

Strongly recommended at this price. Theft and crash cover, plus race and travel options, are compared in our Best Bike Insurance UK 2026. We also recommend frame protection from day one – fitting after a chip is too late.
