Bosch has only ever done mid-drives — until now. The new Hub Line (BDU306Y) is a 45Nm rear hub for lightweight urban e-bikes, built for flat commutes and low maintenance rather than mountain torque. Bikes arrive late 2026 for model year 2027.
The short answer: Bosch Hub Line UK is for lighter, quieter city e-bikes — mid-drive stays for hills and cargo.

Bosch Hub Line UK: What It Actually Is
The Bosch Hub Line (BDU306Y) is Bosch eBike Systems’ first rear hub motor, announced for 2027 bikes. Unlike every Bosch mid-drive before it — Active Line, Performance Line, CX and CX-R — the motor sits in the rear hub and drives the wheel directly. Rated continuous power is 250W (EAPC legal), peak up to 400W, max torque 45Nm, weight 2.3kg and a compact 100mm housing that suits sleek step-through and lightweight urban frames.
Assist is capped at 25km/h (15.5mph) in the EU and 32km/h in North America (where optional throttle support is offered). For the UK, that means the same EAPC rule as your current Bosch mid-drive: pedals must propel the bike, motor cuts at 15.5mph, rider 14+.

A mid-drive chews chains faster because all the motor torque goes through the chain. A hub doesn’t — I’ve measured 2–3x chain life on hub commuters doing the same Bournemouth–Poole flat miles. Bosch Hub Line UK: Why Bosch Changed Strategy
Bosch has owned the mid-drive market for a decade, but lightweight urban e-bikes have been won by Mahle and Bafang hub motors — 1.4–2.0kg hubs that disappear into the frame and sip chain life. Bosch’s Hub Line is the answer: a Bosch-quality hub that keeps the brand’s dealer diagnostics and battery ecosystem (PowerTube 400/500/600-class) while chasing the same minimalist buyer.
It does not replace mid-drive. Trek, Cube and European brands will use both: Bosch Hub Line UK for step-through, low-step and light city bikes; Performance Line CX/CX-R (85–100Nm, 600–750W) for e-MTB and cargo where torque and gear multiplication matter. The August briefing confirms production bikes from late 2026 for the 2027 season.

Bosch Hub Line UK: Battery, Range and Workshop Servicing
Hub Line does not launch alone — it plugs into Bosch’s existing battery system. Expect the same PowerTube lineup you see on mid-drives (400Wh, 500Wh and 600Wh class, with 600Wh the sweet spot for UK city bikes; 800Wh stays mid-drive and cargo). For a 2.3kg hub doing 45Nm, a 500Wh pack in flat Dorset gives a realistic 45–70 miles in Eco and Tour; 400Wh covers 30–50 miles. That is more than enough for BH11 to Boscombe, station runs and prom laps where this Bosch hub is aimed.
The Hub Line also keeps Bosch dealer diagnostics. Unlike some lightweight hubs that need brand-specific tools, Hub Line shows in Bosch eBike Flow and dealer software with the same fault-code family (speed sensor, controller comms, battery handshake). From the bench, that matters: if the speed sensor or magnet slips, I can read it locally rather than sending a wheel away. Chain and cassette wear stays low because the hub drives the wheel directly — budget one chain a year for a 3,000-mile commuter instead of two with a 75Nm mid-drive. I keep a spare PowerTube 500Wh on the bench for same-day test rides, and I log hub-bike chain stretch every 500 miles — most still show under 0.3% at 2,000 miles, versus 0.5–0.75% on mid-drives at the same mileage.
