Bafang Mid-Drive & Hub — What It Is

Last winter a Shimano E6100 came in “dead” — display error W013. Not the motor: torque sensor needed a 2-minute E-TUBE recalibration after a chain replacement. The 2026 backdrop is batteries are statutory now, motors are still EAPC. The OPSS made lithium battery safety statutory for UKCA (Dec 2024). Motor law didn’t change — the DfT’s 500W/throttle proposal was dropped Jan 2025 after 2,121 responses. So a bigger watt number on a listing is not “more legal” — it’s a moped (tax, insurance, helmet). Stick to audited 250W mid-drives and you keep cycle-path access plus the shop network that actually services them.
