Tubeless fails are usually tool fails. Get the right kit before you unbox a tyre.

• Tubeless-ready rim and tyre — both marked TLR / Tubeless Ready. Non-tubeless tyres can seat but rarely hold air reliably at 80 PSI
• Rim tape — correct width for your internal width. For 19-21mm internal road rims use 23-25mm tape; 23-25mm gravel internal use 27-30mm. One layer, stretched tight, overlap valve by 10cm
• Tubeless valves — correct length for rim depth, with O-ring and lock nut. Remove the core for sealant injection
• Sealant — Stan's Rolled Gold for road/gravel (35ml in 28mm), or Original for MTB. Low viscosity helps through-valve injection
• Air — compressor or blast track pump (AirShot-style). Standard track pumps often will not seat a tight road bead
• Soapy water, tyre levers, clean cloth, isopropyl — clean rim bed, light soap on bead to help it pop

• Do it warm: tyres seat easier after 30 min in a warm room — beads are more pliable
• Soap helps: wipe soapy water on both beads, not the rim bed — it helps the bead slide and pop
• Valve first: fit valve before tyre, O-ring inside rim bed, lock nut hand tight plus quarter turn — overtightening deforms the seal

1. Strip and clean the rim

Remove old tape, old sealant and any rim strip. Wipe the rim bed clean with isopropyl and a lint-free cloth. No residue, no dust. If the rim was taped before, check for spoke hole edges that have lifted — re-clean and re-tape.

2. Tape the rim

Start opposite the valve hole. Pull tape tight, press into the centre channel as you go, keep it centred. Overlap the valve hole by 5-10cm each side so the valve sits on tape, not on a joint. One stretched layer is enough for most rims; a second layer can help stubborn road rims but adds thickness that makes tight beads tighter. Press firmly with a thumb or tyre lever handle to eliminate bubbles, especially around the valve hole — poke a small hole, do not cut a slit.

3. Fit the valve

Push valve through, O-ring inside, lock nut outside. Hand tight, then a quarter turn with pliers on the nut flats only — just enough to compress the O-ring. Too tight and the rubber distorts and leaks. Fit the valve core loosely for now.

4. Fit the tyre dry

Mount one bead, then the second by hand where possible, levers only for the last tension. Use soapy water on the beads. Ensure the bead sits in the centre channel, not on the rim shoulder — that gives you the slack to finish the second bead without a fight.

5. Seat the bead — without sealant

Remove the valve core for maximum airflow. Hit it with a compressor or blast pump in one sharp burst. You should hear two pops as both beads seat. Inflate to the max on the tyre sidewall briefly to fully seat, then deflate. Check the mould line above the rim is even all round — if it dips, the bead is not seated there; add a little soapy water and re-hit. The tyre should now hold air for a few minutes even with no sealant.

6. How to fit tubeless tyres: inject sealant through the valve

7. How to fit tubeless tyres: re-inflate and coat

Refit the valve core, inflate to your riding pressure. Now coat: tilt the wheel 45 degrees, spin slowly for 30 seconds, flip, repeat, then lay flat and bounce. Go for a 2-3 mile gentle ride to fully coat inside — this matters more at high pressure where the sealant must be at the puncture site instantly.

8. Check, top up and maintain

Check pressure after 24 hours. A 5-10 PSI drop overnight on a fresh setup is normal as tape and beads bed in — re-inflate and re-check. After that, check sealant monthly: remove core, dip with a zip tie or syringe. Top up through the valve; do not break the bead. In summer refresh at 6-8 weeks, in winter monthly. If you have not checked in 6 months, drain and refill.

• Pouring sealant into an open tyre: messy, inconsistent dose and you have to fight the bead again. Inject through the valve once seated — cleaner and more accurate
• Tape too narrow: air tracks to spoke holes. Measure internal width, buy 2-4mm wider tape so it rides up the sidewalls slightly
• Slit valve hole: a slit lifts under pressure. Poke a small round hole and push the valve through — tape stays flat
• Skipping the shake: sealant pools. If you do not spin and tilt, the first thorn hits dry rubber
• Old sealant boogers: dried latex balls block the valve. Flush them out when you refresh — they are what rattles inside when you shake the wheel
• Wrong pump: a weak track pump will not seat a tight 28mm road tyre. Borrow a compressor or use a blast canister; seating dry proves the tape job before sealant hides leaks
