Stan’s Rolled Gold Sealant UK: 3 PSI Loss at 100 PSI Tested — Road & Gravel Review | Cycling News

Stan's rolled gold sealant, road tubeless, gravel sealant, 2026
The first Stan's sealant built for high-pressure road and gravel, not MTB. Standard tubeless sealant is brilliant at 30 PSI on a mountain bike tyre. At 80-100 PSI on a 28mm road tyre it sprays, loses air fast and often fails to seal before you are flat. Stan's new Rolled Gold claims to fix that: 35ml in a 28mm tyre, losing as little as 3 PSI while sealing up to 7.8mm at 100 PSI. Here is what was announced, how it was tested, and what it means on UK lanes — plus how to fit tubeless right so the sealant can do its job.
The short answer on Stan's Rolled Gold UK: it is the only Stan's formula engineered for 35-100 PSI low-volume tyres, sealing faster with less sealant — 35ml in a 28mm road tyre versus 50ml for Original/Race Day in the same size — and 80ml versus 105ml for a 29×2.4in tyre.
In over 30 years in the Bournemouth workshop I have seen the same road tubeless failure: a thorn or flint nicks a 28mm tyre at 85 PSI, the sealant weeps for 10-20 seconds, you lose 25-40 PSI and the ride is over. Higher pressure pushes more sealant and air out before the latex can plug the hole. Stan's says Rolled Gold answers that with a high-latex, water-based formula plus small-particle technology and a low-viscosity flow that reaches the puncture quickly even at top speeds, and can still be injected through the valve for easy setup.
Below is what Stan's launched for Rolled Gold, how it differs from Original and Race Day, how lab and drum testing was done, and the workshop tips that make any sealant — including this one — work on Dorset flint and hedgerow thorns. Why High Pressure Breaks Most Sealants
Stan's introduced tubeless sealant more than 25 years ago and mountain bikes were a natural fit: relatively low tyre pressures give the latex time to coagulate and plug the hole. On the road the physics flips. At 80-100 PSI and low volume, air and sealant spray out fast while the puncture is still open. Many sealants will eventually seal, but only after you have lost 20-40 PSI — unrideable on a narrow 28mm at speed, and a reliability hit you cannot afford when the tyre is already at its pressure ceiling.
Stan's says Rolled Gold was engineered for that window specifically — the first sealant in their line built for modern road and gravel pressures rather than adapted from MTB. In their words it is meant to deliver very fast sealing while keeping pressure loss to as little as 3 PSI, maintaining the sealing quality they are known for. As a mechanic that is the claim that matters: not just sealed or not sealed, but how much pressure you keep while it seals.
For UK riders the puncture mix is familiar: flint shards on country lanes, thorns through the tread after hedge cutting, glass in town. All three are small, sharp punctures in the 1-4mm range — well within the 7.8mm Stan's tested to. The challenge is sealing them before the tyre goes soft enough to rim-strike or burp.
What road riders actually need from sealant
- Speed to seal: low viscosity so sealant reaches the hole in the first tyre rotation, not the fifth
- Efficiency at low dose: road tyres hold less sealant — 35ml must be enough, not 60-90ml like MTB
- Valve injection: so you can top up without breaking the bead
- Durable plug: small particles plus latex that holds under repeated flex and pressure cycles, not just a one-time lab seal
The pressure window
MTB: 22-35 PSI
Plenty of time to seal, high volume masks loss
Gravel: 35-60 PSI
Middle ground — Rolled Gold's sweet spot
Road: 60-100 PSI
Hardest test — fast spray, low volume
Rolled Gold is rated 35-100 PSI — it covers gravel and road in one bottle
Workshop take
I have cut open plenty of road tubeless tyres where the sealant pooled at the bottom after a week of commuting. Low viscosity matters more on the road than off-road because the centrifugal force at 20mph is higher and the tyre contacts the road more often. If the sealant is too thick it does not reach the puncture fast enough at 85 PSI. Rolled Gold's claim to flow quickly at top speeds is exactly what you want for that first second after a thorn goes through.
Timing tip
- Fitting fresh this week? Tape properly first, then add 35ml through the valve — guide here: How to Fit Tubeless Tyres
- Already tubeless? Top up through the valve, no need to unseat. Shake and spin the wheel for 30 seconds after adding.
- Winter riders: Stan's tested -20 to 120 deg F — UK 0-5 deg C is inside that window, but cold sealant is thicker so check levels monthly
How Stan's Built Rolled Gold for Road & Gravel
Stan's frames this as decades of research applied to a new formula. Based on their launch video and tech notes, the key details are:
High-latex, water-based formula with particle technology
The base is a high latex, water-based formula combined with carefully optimised particle technology. The latex does the sealing; a high concentration of small sealing particles works with the latex to close punctures quickly and create a durable plug. Stan's says the combination is what lets it seal with as little as 35ml in a 700c x 28mm tyre (80ml for 29×2.4in) — the lightest road dose in the Stan's range, versus 50ml/105ml for Original and Race Day — without carrying extra rotational weight.
Low viscosity for fast flow at speed
A low viscosity formula is meant to flow quickly to the puncture for fast sealing at top speeds. On a rotating 28mm tyre at 20mph, sealant has fractions of a second before pressure pushes it out. Thinner flow helps it arrive while pressure is still high. It can also be injected through the valve, which in the workshop means less mess than pouring into an open tyre and no broken bead to reseat on a stubborn road tyre.
Sustainability and production
Beyond sealing, Stan's highlights responsibly sourced natural latex in a water-based formula that is certified biodegradable by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and EU Deforestation Regulation compliant. Like all Stan's sealants it is produced and bottled at their 100 percent solar powered facility in Big Flats, New York — yes, that is the real name of the town. Whether sustainability sells sealant in the UK is secondary, but the water-based formula is at least workshop-friendly to handle and clean up.

How Stan's Tested It — Static vs Dynamic
| Static testing — tyre stationary after tread and sidewall punctures | Monitors bubbling, spraying, sealing speed and immediate pressure loss in a controlled environment. Rolled Gold was observed to stabilise quickly to prevent further air loss. |
| Dynamic testing — rotating drum with rider load | Tyres run on a rotating drum that adds rotation and weight to simulate a rider, through on/off cycles over a 24-hour period with two-hour rides each time. This evaluates long-term seal durability, pressure retention and performance under continuous simulated riding after a puncture. |
Through that testing Stan's claims Rolled Gold's ability to instantly seal punctures up to 7.8mm in high-pressure road tyres was unmatched by any other tubeless sealant currently in the market, and that extensive head-to-head time placed it at the very top for road — their most challenging application for any formula. That is Stan's claim, not ours, but the protocol at least tests what matters: does the plug hold when you keep riding. Temperature testing is quoted at -20 to 120 deg F — which comfortably covers UK conditions, even a frosty Dorset morning.
Sealant Only Works If the Tubeless Setup Is Right
This is where the workshop link matters. The lightest sealant in the world will not save a rim with a dry tape joint, a loose valve or a bead that never popped. If you are moving to tubeless for road or gravel, do the fitting properly first — then the 35ml dose and 3 PSI claim have a chance to hold true on the road.
- New to tubeless? Start here: How to Fit Tubeless Tyres UK — Workshop Guide — tape width, valve fit, seating the bead with a track pump or compressor, injecting through the valve, and the shake-and-spin that spreads sealant. That guide uses 35ml for 28mm road and 45-60ml for 40-45mm gravel, exactly the Rolled Gold window.
- Already tubeless? Check levels every 6-8 weeks in summer, monthly in winter — sealant dries out. Top up through the valve (Rolled Gold's low viscosity helps here), do not pour into a half-seated tyre.
- Tyre choice matters: See Best Bike Tyres UK 2026: Road, MTB, Gravel & Commuter for which road and gravel tyres seat easiest and hold tubeless best — because a good bead saves more flats than any bottle.

Common Mistakes With Road Tubeless Sealant
From the bench, these are the repeat offenders that make even good sealant look bad on road and gravel:
- Too little sealant: trying to save 10ml on a 28mm then wondering why a 3mm thorn did not seal — 35ml is Stan's minimum for Rolled Gold in a 28mm; gravel 40-45mm needs 45-60ml
- Dry, wrinkled or narrow tape: air tracks under the tape, sealant weeps at the spoke holes and you blame the sealant. Use the right width for your internal rim width, overlap the valve, press firmly
- Not shaking after filling: sealant pools at the bottom. Spin the wheel, tilt it, bounce it — 30 seconds each side — then ride 2-3 miles to coat
- Old sealant left for 6 months: latex dries to latex boogers. Top up or flush. In summer check at 6 weeks; UK winter is more forgiving but still check
- Wrong valve core: cheap cores clog if you inject thick sealant. Rolled Gold is low viscosity and valve-friendly, but still remove the core, inject, then clear the core with a puff of air
Fix those and the 3 PSI sealing claim becomes realistic rather than optimistic.
